| Summary: | As the primary author, I set out to conduct a qualitative study for my dissertation that aimed for a deeper understanding of the challenges caregivers of older multilingual adults with dementia experience within the U.S. health care system. At the outset, however, I encountered significant recruitment challenges, with very low participation rates, possibly related to the immigration status of potential subjects living in the United States. Many potential participants reported declining to enroll out of fear that their visas or work permits would be denied, negatively affecting their lives in an anti-immigrant or racist political climate. Because of these challenges, I paused my original study to understand the obstacles inherent to participation. Immigration status and the lives of immigrants are, of course, affected by policy decisions on the part of various government bodies at both the federal and the state levels. More recently, anti-immigrant rhetoric has reverberated across news sources and social media outlets, at times repeating the negative sentiments of only a handful of individuals. Some of the reporting repeats inaccurate or misleading facts as well, whether from the source being quoted or inherent to what is being told. I set out to study, then, the ways the "story" of immigration and immigrants is relayed in a variety of news sources and look for correlations between the social and political climate and the participation rate of my study. To evaluate the news sources, I analyzed a number of fact-checking sites to determine the degree of accuracy of the information within the reports as it relates to immigration or immigrants. Through this process, I became more cognizant of the responsibility of the journalist as well as the critical need for ethical reporting on all topics. |
