| Summary: | Participatory health research (PHR) is the use of participatory approaches and methods to improve our understanding of the patterns of diseases, health status, and health challenges in populations. Participatory approaches not only describe and explain health problems and their causes but also bring up discussion topics such as necessary social change that might be required to improve the same. Using PHR, this case study aims to engage various stakeholders that are pivotal to promoting adolescent health and empowering them through improved access to information and quality health care services. This is a mixed-method interventional trial, which used the principles of participatory approach for the effective health services delivery. As part of the mixed method, quantitative survey was conducted among adolescents (demand-side) to understand the change in knowledge and practices during the pre- and post-intervention and a qualitative survey was conducted to document the challenges and field experiences of the system workers (supply-side). The intervention package includes strengthening of frontline workers and developing a convergence committee (supply-side) and training to adolescents with execution of adolescent days (demand-side) to facilitate effective delivery of health services. Although many challenges were encountered during the research process, most of them were overcome with the help of PHR. To conclude, this case study shows that PHR is a unique method of research where learning and research are not considered as separate entities. |
