Description
Summary:Conducting research with vulnerable populations requires extra preparation to ensure the protection of your study participants. Avoidance of working with these groups (i.e., pregnant women, children, inmates) leads to gaps in the literature and a lack of thorough understanding of specific issues related to these populations. To strengthen the understanding of how pregnant women think and feel about the decision to possibly engage in breastfeeding with their child (prenatal breastfeeding self-efficacy) is best accomplished through a validated instrument. Direct, in-person recruitment and completion of the scale by the target population will ensure your scale, when validated, is appropriate for use among the intended population. Important steps to complete data collection in a medical (obstetrics and gynecology) clinic include written agreements between the clinic director and the investigator, a short pilot of the survey scale in the clinic setting, preparing to deal with unintentional study bias, deciding the appropriate compensation for participants, and setting up a tracking system to maintain records of your patient encounters. This case study describes the experience of a solo investigator who conducted self-administered surveys among 133 pregnant patients on-site at an obstetrics and gynecology clinic to assess breastfeeding intention and prenatal breastfeeding self-efficacy and validate a new prenatal breastfeeding self-efficacy scale.
