Description
Summary:This case study documents reflections on our three-year research project aimed at developing a culturally relevant happiness scale. We employed a blended research approach, combining both inductive and deductive methods, as well as qualitative and quantitative research techniques to understand diverse perspectives on happiness among Indians and use this understanding to develop a new happiness scale. The project comprised three distinct phases. In the initial qualitative phase, we conducted semi-structured interviews and qualitative surveys with a socio-demographically diverse group of participants to gain insights into how people in India define happiness and identify the factors associated with it. Next, in the scale development phase, we pooled scale items from three key areas: existing theories and scales related to happiness and related constructs, eastern and Indian literature on these constructs, and the qualitative data we had collected. In the final phase, we rigorously evaluated the psychometric robustness of our scale. This process involved expert reviews, a pilot study, and a large-scale main study. Throughout this case study, we delve into the various decisions made in each of these phases, highlighting the challenges encountered and the lessons learned. This case study can be a valuable resource for students and researchers embarking on similar projects, especially when working with diverse populations in India or other settings, offering insights into some good practices and considerations.
