Description
Summary:This case study stems from the original research titled, "Māori values in geothermal management and development," which aimed to identify such values and explore their historical roots, thereby substantiating their integration into geothermal management in Aotearoa. The research additionally reinterpreted these values as indicators of cultural sustainability that provided measurable parameters with which to assess the extent of the values' preservation. Wānanga, Māori-based workshops, played a pivotal role in this research, facilitating the acquisition, development, interpretation, and dissemination of mātauranga Māori, from which the Māori values and indicators were extracted, by adhering to traditional processes. This case study delves into how wānanga processes highlight Māori concepts and why they are legitimate academic research methodologies. It details the wānanga conducted for the study and how it aligned with Kaupapa Māori research principles in the geothermal sector and tikanga Māori within geothermally active hapū ("subtribal") communities. This case study aims to provide insights into why wānanga was chosen as the research methodology and how to conduct a successful wānanga within Kaupapa Māori research.
