| Summary: | This study reflects on our experience as volunteers working with Indigenous people and communities across Asia and Australia. In this work, we discuss our interactions across communities in two Indigenous settings. We do so with the aim of exploring the possibilities for engaging with "how" to conduct research in and with Indigenous communities to strengthen relationships with Indigenous people. In taking this approach, our work centers the voices of the people in community life-specifically, elder knowledge-to reframe and demonstrate the limitations of colonial modes of thinking about and doing research. This approach allows us, as minority and migrant voices, to show how Indigenous people have been locked in ongoing histories and processes of colonial violence. We found that working with Indigenous communities demands a cultural shift and a flipping of existing "we've always done it this way" models that do not account for relationship building over the long term and that do not begin with community aspirations and Indigenous law. This work offers lessons for researchers interested in working with communities other than their own. We write this for the people with the people in community life. We acknowledge elders Jerry Jangala and Wanta Jampijinpa and within our communities across the Guntarik and Dahiya extended families. |
