Description
Summary:This case study explores how a research project that is inflected through a queer subjectless critique can be conceptualized and operationalized without overly predefining the kinds of subjects to recruit for the research project. A queer subjectless critique problematizes fixed identitarian categories as well as the valorization of LGBTQ+ identities as queer theory's primary referents. I detail and reflect on the challenges of applying a subjectless critique to the generation of qualitative empirical data on the intimate temporal lives of single individuals in Singapore. Accordingly, I demonstrate that subscribing to a queer subjectless slant does not necessitate the jettisoning of subject identifications (e.g., gender, sexuality, age, and marital status), especially in the profiling/recruitment of "single" respondents. Overall, I argue that a subjectless critique can be incorporated into qualitative research methodologies by being attentive to subject positions or subjectivities that exceed their categorical boundaries as well as the slippages between discursive identities/identifications and material practices.
