| Summary: | The overall aim of this proposed project was to study factors related to an earlier or later age at natural menopause among middle-age women in Canada. Data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging platform were used for secondary analysis of this project. This case study will use this objective and data set as examples of secondary data analysis. The choice of the methods was based solely on the availability of data and the ease acquisition of this data to examine this research. Judging the suitability of the data to be used to study the objective above was crucial. The five major steps required to gain access to Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging data are as follows: submitting the application form, review of the application by the different Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging sub committees, completing and signing the data access agreement, data set preparation and delivery, and finally preparing the final report on the analysis performed. Data management is an iterative step throughout data analysis. It is recommended that all documentation pertaining to the data in terms of protocol, questionnaire, and any variables created be secured prior to initiating analysis. The major advantage of using existing data is the relatively quick pace of completing the research and minimal costs incurred. Potential disadvantages to secondary data analysis include that the data were collected for some other purpose other than the research question intended. This case study documents how secondary data analysis can provide a rich source of information and portends an opportunity for researchers to pose unique questions. |
