Description
Summary:In this method case, I will outline participatory approaches that can be used in qualitative research studies to acquire nuanced understanding with regard to digital health issues among pediatric patients. The objective of the study that this method case builds on was to explore pediatric obesity patients' experiences of engaging with online health information as well as to explore their experiences around self-presentation on social media. Because I wanted to explore the participants' own experiences, a qualitative study design was used. Thus, individual interviews were conducted with 20 adolescent patients. I will elaborate on two main lessons learned with regard to the study methods. First, the use of a laptop with software that enabled me to record the participants' screen activities was very valuable in this qualitative study. It allowed me to center the individual interviews around tangible examples that the patients showed. Most importantly, this approach was also accepted by the adolescent participants. Therefore, this method might be used in other studies and research areas where a focus is to explore digital health experiences and practices among pediatric patients. Second, the involvement of several researchers with various backgrounds facilitated the data analysis and my understanding of this research area. From a practical perspective, it also helped me during data collection as I, if needed, had the opportunity to use a female interviewer if this were to be preferred by the study participants. Finally, as in all studies focusing on digital health, it is always important to consider the issue of time sensitivity, which will be further discussed.
