| Summary: | This case study provides a perspective on exploring the health care decision-making process of women living with traumatic brain injuries from intimate partner violence. A constructivist grounded theory approach was used to analyze both secondary and primary data in an emergent process to generate theory about how traumatic brain injuries from intimate partner violence affects the lives of women, their relationships with the abuser (including the episode of intimate partner violence where the traumatic brain injury is inflicted), their families, and the greater social context as it relates to deciding whether or not to seek health care for the traumatic brain injuries. Data collection and analysis occurred as an iterative process and the two were conducted simultaneously. Dimensional analysis was used as the approach to generating grounded theory and is the key process used "to discover the meanings of interactions observed in situations," and to explore the question "What all is involved here?" Situational analysis was used as an additional strategy for data expansion and to make situational maps to understand social ecologies and lay out all elements of the situation of receiving a head injury in the context of intimate partner violence. The theory of "living in fear and prioritizing safety" emerged from the explanatory matrix, a strategy used to organize the data and provide theoretical direction. Women were forced to make a choice about going to the hospital or the shelter and live with the consequences. This case study offers insight on using situational maps to open up the data and dimensional analysis to guide theory development. |
