| Summary: | Although the National Inpatient Sample is a relatively inexpensively available nationally representative all-payer database, it could be challenging for researchers because it is an administrative database and contains data used for billing purposes rather than research. This research methods case summarizes our experiences in using National Inpatient Sample for two clinical studies and provides a brief overview of challenges such as accounting for the complex survey design and missing values, using International Classification of Diseases and Clinical Classification Software codes for diagnosis and procedures, accounting for changes in data collection methods instituted by National Inpatient Sample in 2012, and interpreting the relationship between hospital volume and outcomes for procedures. As National Inpatient Sample is a large administrative database, researchers should interpret results based on clinical relevance and not merely statistical significance despite using rigorous statistical methods and the guidelines listed in the Checklist for Working with the National Inpatient Sample. |
