Description
Summary:Mediation and moderation are two common statistical approaches to examine relations among variables, but they also reflect important conceptual patterns in theory. The present case study describes a set of studies of social factors in mental health, in which both statistical methods were applied to test corresponding hypotheses. I first articulate mediation and moderation as conceptual frameworks in theory, then link these conceptual foundations with the statistical definitions and procedures available to test theory-grounded hypotheses. In addition to emphasizing integration between theoretical and statistical components, the case study identifies practical print and online resources that aid in conducting and communicating mediation and moderation analyses. The challenges, choices, and opportunities that arose during this case are discussed from the perspectives of both study methodology and the broader research experience. The case study focuses on the roles of social relationships and emotion regulation in depression, but the key principles and practical tools for mediation and moderation analysis are applicable to a wide range of research questions, theories, and study designs in psychology and the social sciences.
