Description
Summary:HIV treatment as prevention is an emerging biomedical prevention approach that advocates the use of pharmaceuticals--in this case, antiretrovirals historically used to treat HIV infection--as prevention tools. People living with HIV who take antiretrovirals consistently and correctly, and who have achieved a very low level of the HIV virus in their blood, are now considered to be no longer infectious. The emergence of biomedical prevention, in contrast to behavioral prevention approaches such as abstinence or consistent condom use, is broadly considered to be a critical paradigm shift within the field of HIV prevention. The substantive focus of my research was an exploration of the emergent discourses of HIV treatment as prevention within the professional social worlds of HIV prevention and treatment, that is, among HIV professionals of various sorts. These included HIV clinicians, policymakers, clinical and social scientists who study HIV, and leaders in HIV community advocacy. I explored this substantive area through a multi-sited approach that involved the analysis of multiple types of elicited and extant data (textual, visual, and material) collected via multiple methods (interviews and ethnographic fieldwork). I describe how I conducted the analysis of this multi-sited data utilizing two distinct but related research methodologies: constructivist grounded theory and situational analysis. I also offer one example of a situational mapping exercise and discuss the lessons learned from combining these methodological approaches.
