| Summary: | This case study seeks to showcase the practicalities in the application of mixed methods to develop and test culturally adapted road symbols in a low middle-income country such as Ghana. In particular, it shows readers the nuances and hurdles that need to be overcome and the messy nature of such research as well as sketching the sociology of knowledge production in this context. Although qualitative studies as part of mixed methods have often been considered "full-blown" processes whose outcomes are some form of themes, this mixed methods study used a qualitative process in which the outcomes are not the usual themes but road symbols. Thus, it shows how focus group discussions can be used to produce road symbols for testing in a quantitative survey. It helps readers to understand how to use unobtrusive observations to generate items for scale development and/or adaption. It also provides insights into improvising in a resource-constrained environment without comprising the rigor of the study. The purpose of this case is also to provide a valuable resource for new and experienced researchers seeking to conduct mixed methods research in resource-constrained environments such as Africa and other parts of the world. |
