| Summary: | In this case study I reflect on the pros and cons of my longitudinal engaged and activist research on the Indonesian lesbian, bisexual, and trans (LBT) movement. My first contact with them took place in the early 1980s. Since then, I have continued to engage with them. Most research methods were qualitative, such as conducting participatory research and collecting oral history interviews. I also did formal open-ended interviews and collected secondary data, both archival documents and social media items. I engaged with my narrators as peers, friends, and later colleagues, sharing the insights I learned on the sensitive theme of sexuality. In seminars and training sessions, I contributed to the development of their methodologic and theoretical skills. They were involved in the design and implementation of the research project at various moments in time. I discuss practical and ethical constraints, such as funding and institutional obstacles, as well as the dilemmas arising from my double position as their friend, adviser, and ethnographer. A sensitive topic was dealing with the tensions caused by discussing issues related to sexual practices. Another topic involves the lessons I learned in this research about decolonizing sexuality studies. In this study, a major effort was made to foreground the concerns, narratives, and knowledge of a marginalized community, both socially stigmatized and politically attacked. The focus of this research was on their history of community building and on shifting identities and narratives. |
