| Summary: | In this methodological case, we draw on the experience from two previous studies to discuss the process of applying an Item Response Theory (IRT) analysis. In both studies, the psychometric properties of two measurement instruments were characterized based on IRT. In this paper, we consider common issues in this type of analysis, including model selection, assumptions testing, model diagnostics, item calibration, reliability, and score estimation. The practicalities of applying IRT are examined, and solutions to overcome common obstacles are offered. |
