Description
Summary:In this case study, I discuss a program of research in which we tested the hypothesis that when victims are able to punish their transgressors, they are more likely to forgive. We conducted six different studies, five of which employed an experimental design. I focus on our efforts to replicate the basic effect of punishment on forgiveness, using several different experimental paradigms. I also use the context of punishment and forgiveness to demonstrate some of the challenges involved when examining how people behave in situations that are not easily amenable to experimental design.
