| Summary: | A single research question can set a scientist on a long, unexpected path of discovery. The cases highlighted here illustrate how theory can guide a researcher through various types of research designs (cross-sectional, correlational, and interventional) to answer the ever-growing number of questions born through the conduct of research. Lessons learned from conducting a single-armed experiential and meaning-based couples intervention for couples confronting late-stage cancer are described, as well as a review of how previous studies led up to the development of the intervention. Research practicalities are explained across our research program, highlighting challenges of participant recruitment in ill populations, limitations of causal claims when randomization is not possible to answer a research question, and limitations in generalizability based on sample diversity. Finally, we touch on the common anxieties students may have related to research methods and emphasize how research can be a creative process with life-long applications. |
