Description
Summary:This case study examines how five students conducted a large-scale archival study on criminal behavior during a college football season. An overview of our experience is described, starting with the process of topic development and background, division of labor, and study design. Additionally, our analytical choices are explored, including the multiple statistical tests that we considered (i.e., time series analyses, multilevel modeling, factorial multivariate analysis of variance), an explanation of our final analysis and the process by which we determined the best strategy for this work. An in-depth description of various mistakes made and obstacles faced along the way (e.g., novel project idea, access to data, inconsistencies in the data, subjective decisions), and how those mistakes and obstacles were handled, is the focus throughout this case. This case concludes with various lessons that were learned from this experience; each are explored and discussed, including the roles of patience, flexibility, creativity, resource identification, and motivation in the research process. These lessons are considered in how they have influenced our present and subsequent work, as well as our recommendations for young researchers as they embark on their own research journeys. The case study is intended for student researchers and those looking to explore unfamiliar designs and analyses. Researchers working in teams may find this case study particularly useful given the unique challenges and advantages inherent when working in research teams.
