| Summary: | This case study provides an account of a 6-year process of using a research team to collect data about aging across seven different countries and four continents. Attention is given to the semi-structured interview approach that creates more effective research design in varied cultural settings. This case illustrates both the similarities and country-specific challenges encountered when seeking older adult participants as interviewees. Similarities identified involve survey translation accuracy, forming research cross-national partnerships, and gaining participant access through culturally appropriate methods. Country-specific differences include the following: having researchers on the ground assisting with data collection, demographic distribution of older adults affecting age eligibility, and the effect of geographic differences (rural vs urban) on data collection and cultural norm difficulties within each country. Engaging data collection with older people in multiple countries leads to a greater understanding of how the methods of data collection must be adjusted to meet the needs of both the respondents and researcher. Therefore, the researcher must cultivate his or her individual characteristics and resources, allowing for both the researcher and respondent to engage in dialogue beyond the safety of what is familiar. |
