| Summary: | This case study provides an account of several practical aspects of in-depth interviewing for a 2-year project funded by the National Science Foundation, "Social and Bio-Genetic Factors of New Forms of Families." Our study of donor-conceived families focuses on new kinds of affiliations that are created both with donors and through the ability to locate other children who share the same donor (i.e., donor siblings). We conducted interviews with a range of parents: single mothers, lesbian couples, and heterosexual couples. The children of these families (ages 10 and older) were also interviewed. This case sheds light on overcoming distinct challenges that emerge from relying on in-depth qualitative interviewing as a vehicle for capturing multiple perspectives on a sensitive subject. We address our resolutions of three practical problems that emerged: (1) working as a research team interviewing both members of adult couples at the same time made it possible to generate dialogue and depth, even on risky topics; (2) including research assistants who are not seasoned interviewers, we explore the need to be sensitive to the status and characteristics of the interviewer and to optimize the process through reflective practice as a team; and (3) reliance on multiple approaches combined with an appreciation of developmental issues facilitated interviews with youth of very different ages. |
