| Summary: | This case study describes the inherent complexity and management challenges that emerge in the context of intersectoral collaborative research. Two principal investigators from different universities co-led the research project with multiple co-investigators. The larger team included partner members representing four disability advocacy and support groups across Canada. The purpose of this mixed-method research was to understand the lived experiences of mid-career workers with disabilities (MCWD) and determine their needs related to career-adaptability to support the development of tools and resources that target MCWDs' adaptive response skills development. The first phase of the research consisted of (1) a comprehensive scoping review, (2) a survey of career adaptability dimensions of MCWD, and (3) focus groups with representative groups of workers living with disability(es), employers, and advocacy groups. This research project had a high degree of complexity, working with a population that experiences a number of potential stressors concerning employment and transition. This case study will provide valuable and unique insights by exploring the challenges and opportunities the research team faced in conducting the study within the context of the global COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to highlighting the methodological issues and barriers experienced throughout the research journey, the case study will discuss the benefits of this complex venture and the lessons learned. Three themes emerged: (1) competencies gained for managing complex interdisciplinary and intersectoral partnerships; (2) the importance of sound methodology for the collection and analysis of reliable and valid data; and (3) the need for redundancy of research methods in uncertain times. |
