| Summary: | Researching social media and online self-representations brings forward a wealth of insights and data that creates new challenges for data collection and analysis. This case explores the use of a feminist multimethodological research approach applied to the study of young women's self-representation on Instagram. This approach combines a feminist media studies perspective, manual collection of social media data, in-depth qualitative textual analysis, and a quantitatively inspired systematic coding that allows for an overview of large amounts of data. This enables interesting potentialities but can also create tensions. This case explores how key aspects of the research design can be shaped by critically engaging with a feminist perspective - from the choice of topic and research object, the strategies for sampling and recruiting research participants, and the ethical approaches to social media data collection. This case also critically reflects on the experience of combining qualitative and quantitative strategies within a single research stage, exploring how a feminist perspective can help to reframe the tensions and contradictions emerging from these contrasting strategies as productive. Finally, this case reflects on how data analysis is shaped by the researcher's positionality and by underlying political concerns that always accompany feminist media studies. |
