Summary:Testimonio developed from Latin American human rights struggles and is generally understood as a first-person narrative that gives voice to injustice and resiliency. Testimonio is grounded in a collective history of resistance, used by nondominant groups to challenge oppression and bring attention to injustice, in an effort to transform it (Burgos-Debray & Mench,͠ 1984). One of the most widely known contemporary testimonios is that of Rigoberta Mench,͠ an indigenous human rights activist from Guatemala.
