Summary:It is common for qualitative research to be portrayed as "inductive" (or sometimes "abductive") in character and for quantitative research to be treated as "deductive" (or "hypothetico-deductive"). Indeed, these are sometimes treated as defining features of the two sorts of research. The contrast here is between developing concepts from a prior theory or deriving them out of some corpus of data. Alternatively, one could say that the difference is between inquiry that begins with a theory or set of hypotheses and research that is more exploratory in character, starting from interest in a particular type of action, setting, group of people, or general issue.
