Description
Summary:Causality has been a controversial concept in qualitative research, and there have been substantial disagreements over its meaning, its usefulness, and even its legitimacy. However, recent developments in the philosophy of causation now provide strong support for the use of qualitative approaches to address causation. This entry addresses the history of views of causality in social research and philosophy, and the influence of these views on qualitative researchers' stances toward causation. It also discusses the major strengths of qualitative research for developing causal explanations and the complementarity of these strengths with those of quantitative research.
