Description
Summary:Research sometimes comes about because the researcher is asked to collect data for a community group. When this happens, multiple stakeholders with differing interests, objectives, and research questions can make a project more complex and compromise may mean that not everyone gets everything they want. In this case study, we discuss a research project where data were collected about sexual assault on a college campus for a sexual assault prevention task force and simultaneously as an independent study for a health-education undergraduate student with little research experience. After interviewing key informants from the task force about their expected outcomes, we decided to administer paper-and-pencil surveys to a sample of college students at the institution. The results were used to prepare a report for the task force and publish in a peer-review journal for a wider audience. Compromises and challenges are discussed for both meeting the needs of all involved and collecting data about a sensitive topic: sexual assault.
