| Summary: | This guide provides an overview of the development and application of a text-based choose-your-own-adventure (CYOA) paradigm to conduct social research online. We review critical elements of successful CYOA media--immersion, choice, and investment--and how they can be generated. We also highlight critical software capabilities for the migration of the CYOA into a digital medium for dissemination to research participants. These elements are reviewed and discussed in the context of a novel CYOA to study sexual assault bystander behavior, creating an applied framework within which to consider CYOA development. Finally, we discuss the primary limitation of the CYOA approach in research and many of the strengths of text-based CYOAs relative to similar research methodologies. This guide should serve as a starting point for researchers interested in integrating text-based CYOAs into their own research programs. |
