520 |a A soundscape represents the sonic equivalent of the term landscape. It describes an acoustic environment as perceived by an individual or group. In a predominantly visual research tradition, soundscape studies offer an additional approach to understanding natural surroundings and the medial world. Soundscape studies are conducted in almost all social sciences. Although it has been the focus of investigations for over 50 years, contemporary soundscape research is still a rather peripheral matter. This entry begins with a review of the history of soundscape studies, followed by the deconstruction of soundscape. Primary areas of soundscape research are then considered, including the popularity of media soundscapes in the 21st century. The entry concludes with some critiques about soundscape and a discussion about the future of soundscape studies.
