Summary:A preeminent mid- and late 20th-century sociologist, James Samuel Coleman (1926-1995) made enduring contributions to social theory, education, mathematical sociology, policy research, and organizational analysis. Coleman devoted his career to understanding social organization and strengthening the capacity of groups and institutions to satisfy the interests of individual persons. His Foundations of Social Theory (1990) proposed an approach to analyzing the development and operation of social systems grounded in individual purposive action. Equality of Educational Opportunity (Coleman et al., 1966) documented substantial Black-White differences in academic achievement and exerted a broad impact on U.S. educational policy.
