Summary:Jon Elster (1940-), a Norwegian philosopher and social scientist, has given major contributions to the philosophy of social science, rational choice theory, political theory, and Marx scholarship. He received his doctoral degree in 1972 at Sorbonne with a dissertation on Karl Marx (with Raymond Aron as his supervisor). At that point he had already published (in Norwegian) studies on G. W. F. Hegel and Marx (Elster, 1969a, 1969b) in addition to an analysis of explanatory models in economic history (Elster, 1971). In the 1970s, Elster continued his work on explanations in the social sciences and rational choice theory in particular.
