Description
Summary:Mental health-related stigma is common and inhibits help-seeking. It triggers fears of devaluation and can add to the burden of a mental disorder. The aim was to develop and evaluate a new questionnaire, which assesses perceived mental health-related stigma. Based on the modified labeling theory, psychometric reasoning and discussion with patients as well as clinicians, items were developed and formed into a self-report questionnaire, the Stigma-9 Questionnaire (STIG-9). To psychometrically evaluate this, questionnaire data from 919 consecutive patients from an outpatient clinic for mental disorders were collected and analyzed. This psychometric case study describes the development as well as the evaluation of the STIG-9. Challenges and pitfalls of conducting psychometric research will be illustrated using a study that was published in the journal Psychiatry Research. The aim is to enable students to design and evaluate psychometric measures. We will provide insights into the generation of items and statistical procedures to examine psychometric properties.
