All good social research has ontological foundations, which means a theory of what there is to study, even if these are not explicitly stated. Researchers start with convictions, theories, hypotheses, opinions, understandings, and assumptions about the world. They then seek to explore, improve, refine, advance, prove, or repudiate these assumptions. It is the connection between these commitments and the contents of their research practices that forms a researcher's overall approach.
