| Summary: | Participatory research is an investigative approach that emphasizes co-learning, power-sharing, and capacity-building and leverages the distinct strengths and resources of the diverse partners to develop relevant and sustainable solutions tailored to address the needs of local communities. The integration of these principles into the research process, while nurturing mutually beneficial, long-term partnerships, establish participatory research as an appropriate framework for organizing system-engaged efforts to address persistent health inequities in marginalized communities. In this case study, I describe my experience as a postdoctoral fellow conducting a mixed-methods research study in partnership with Memorial Hermann Health System--one of the largest not-for-profit health systems in southeast Texas. We used a systems-based participatory research approach to examine factors that were associated with frequent emergency department use among safety-net patients for conditions usually seen in primary care settings. Findings from the study were used to inform quality improvement efforts in Memorial Hermann's existing patient navigation program and have been disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national meetings. The partnership has expanded to include multiple hospitals and programs within the Memorial Hermann system. |
