| Summary: | This case study describes the application of qualitative research methods to document the experiences of Mexican transgender asylum seekers. We documented pre- and post-immigration life experiences of male-to-female transgender Mexicans, the resulting health consequences of these experiences, and gaps in the public health system to address their needs. This was a novel application of qualitative research methods, using portions of their asylum applications (the asylum declaration document and the psychological evaluation) to conduct a systematic analysis, called a document review, to document common experiences of trauma in Mexico and public health service needs after arrival in the United States. A multidisciplinary team created a case definition, developed a codebook, and, after coding several cases, developed a modified coding strategy to code these complex cases utilizing the diverse training and skills of the research team. After the cases were coded and checked, the team conducted a thematic analysis to document common patterns of experiences and unmet needs both in Mexico and the United States following immigration. Challenges during the research process are discussed as well as special issues to consider when studying a vulnerable population group. |
