Description
Summary:This case study details the process by which a mixed methods approach--a concurrent nested design--was utilized for purposes of a collaborative research project that aimed to examine the barriers of advance care planning (ACP) experienced by care managers, and their accompanying attitudes and feelings through the use of qualitative focus group data and quantitative survey data. The study involved a two-part multisite study where concurrent data collection was initially intended to be analyzed separately and then compared in the interpretation phase of the study. The purpose of this case study was to explain the importance of collaborative communication in the design of mixed methods research and to illustrate the value of exploring and adopting different approaches for analysis and interpretation of data to best answer the research question(s) and fulfill proposed aims and objectives. In adopting a concurrent nested design for this research study, following the collection of data and initial analyses, we achieved a deeper understanding of our results and their implications for future ACP discussions and practices, as well as a way to further achieve the validity and reliability of qualitative research often scrutinized for its subjectivity. Our findings provided a deeper understanding of ACP and those barriers experienced by care managers, concluding ACP discussions can be successfully led but not without further education, resources, and team-based guidance for this population.
