Description
Summary:In the United States, governmental public health is responsible for the protection and promotion of the health of the citizenry. To accomplish the many tasks associated with these aims, a robust workforce is necessary. However, retirement of the baby boomers and other demographic trends have put pressure on the workforce--with more than one third considering leaving their organization in the next year or planning to retire in the next five. Understanding how many staff can be expected to actually leave or retire and how many exist to replace them are the purposes of the research project discussed herein. In this case, we recount the means of modalities of answering this question, issues encountered and lessons learned, and general advice for students trying to tackle complicated questions that use disparate data sets. We focus on analysis of the difficulties associated with triangulation and reconciliation of multiple data sources, as well as considerations for fielding primary data collection instruments to supplement a broader triangulation study. We conclude with guidance on theoretical and practical approaches to achieve these aims. In part, we conclude that if one must answer a question and is not able to do so in a way that meets the gold standard of the method or field, then one must strive to be rigorous and pragmatic. Concrete thoughts and guidance are provided along these principles.
