| Summary: | Although there are unique challenges for conducting health survey research among underserved communities, collecting information from participants utilizing safety-net services, such as those provided by free or reduced-cost community clinics, is important for improving our understanding of vulnerable groups who may experience elevated health disparities. This case study describes the experiences of a research team that conducted self-administered surveys with 686 United States-Mexico border residents. Surveys took place in the clinic waiting rooms of two charitable clinic systems in the lower Rio Grande Valley of southernmost Texas. Keys for successful research include establishing partnerships with community clinics, reviewing patient demographics and needs to inform survey design, taking care to design a survey that protects the anonymity of patients and their health information, and tailoring surveys to the cultural and language preferences of participants. |
