| Summary: | This case study discusses the methodological considerations of a small qualitative study involving children's nurses, which explored their perceptions of involvement in child protection medical examinations. The qualitative methodology used was interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Three female children's nurses who had been qualified for an average of 15 years were interviewed for this study. Each semi-structured interview was digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim, and thematically analyzed. To situate this research project within the current available evidence base, an extensive literature search was conducted. Due to limited literature available, this included articles dating back to 2000, which identified a dated evidence base, indicating a need for current research to be undertaken. On completion of this research study, it did identify similar findings to previous studies, thus adding to the evidence base. The findings from this study suggest that these children's nurses felt underprepared for participating in child protection medicals because of perceptions of a lack of pre-registration experience, a lack of succession planning, and feelings of isolation among other specificities related to children's nursing practice. This case study discusses what IPA is; the data collection methods used; the process of data analysis; and identifies the key themes, which were developed based on the complex analysis steps that took place during this study. It highlights the lengthy process to achieve approvals and other time factors to be considered by others using IPA as a qualitative methodology. It further highlights the ethical considerations for this type of study, alongside the challenges of recruiting to this study. Finally, it identifies that the research methodology used was appropriate to the type of study and would allow others to sensitively explore the subject material, given the emotive nature of child protection work. |
