| Summary: | This case study is based on a fieldwork project, conducted in two phases (6 weeks and 2 weeks), that aimed to understand and document patterns of communication on health and HIV/AIDS in a sex worker community in Kalighat, India. This research project sought to present local narratives on how sex workers make sense of their health and HIV and the health and lives of their children. In this research project, I adopt a critically reflexive methodological stance. It means I acknowledge that my position of privilege, the goals of my research, and my experiences and interactions with research participants are vital to how the localized vocalizations are created, analyzed, and documented. I interrogate myself and invite readers to do the same and re-interpret my methods and interpretations. I conclude that a critically reflexive researcher position means that at every step of the research process, the researcher:Suspends judgment.Listens to local narratives in a way that helps one empathize.Learns to respect difference and internalizes the idea that difference is normal.Learns to consistently reconfigure research goals and methods to create spaces for alternative rationalizations on how a member of a marginalized community communicates about health.Learns to consistently second guess their interpretation of events and communication in marginalized spaces such that the researcher invites an interrogation and a reinterpretation of their methods and findings. |
