| Summary: | A training program for home-based acute pediatric nursing care was evaluated to determine if nurses had been adequately prepared. Many nursing training programs are evaluated but they are often limited to capturing perceptions about the training itself. Comprehensive evaluation of the training and its impact on acute care practice in the community was sought. The Kirkpatrick model for training evaluation provided the framework for this comprehensive, multilevel evaluation and, consequently, for the research approach. A set of mixed-methods research tools was developed. The sample size was limited to a specific group of nurses, heightening the need for high participation rates in the first three levels of the evaluation. A mixed-methods approach facilitated qualitative or quantitative data to be collected for each of the Kirkpatrick's levels of evaluation, but required the researcher to have skills in data collection for both the methods. The approach enabled a comprehensive, multifaceted evaluation of the training and its impact on the clinical practice to be undertaken. The Kirkpatrick model proved valuable and most appropriate for evaluating this training program for nurses. |
