| Summary: | We used a mixed-methods research design to explore gender bias in job selection for a project management position. Because of the potentially sensitive nature of this topic, we had to develop creative ways to identify a sample, frame the questions for the study, and solicit input from potential respondents. We developed a scenario and used a between-subjects research design in which we posited a situation in which a project manager was interviewing for an open position. We created two versions of the scenario, only changing the name of the job candidate (Stan or Susan). We studied the impact of several social and psychological factors as predictor variables (i.e., perceived competence, likeability, trust, and self-interest) on likelihood of hiring. Our findings suggest that gender only acted as a significant moderator for perceived technical competence. Moreover, there are some important ethical and methodological considerations when testing sensitive research topics. |
