| Summary: | Employing a phenomenological approach, this study examined the lived experiences of migrant nurses and other institutional actors or stakeholders within the Caribbean healthcare system. Through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and a survey with health actors in St. Lucia, Jamaica and the United Kingdom, the study assessed the short- and medium-term effects on healthcare systems and aimed to identify ways of minimizing negatives impacts while optimizing benefits. While in the immediate or short term, nurse migration leads to nurse shortages and deteriorating quality of health care, in the medium to long term, the analyses revealed benefits such as remittances, knowledge and skills transfer, return of resources, and Diaspora contributions to the health sectors. Discussions with stakeholders resulted in policy options for better managing the movement of nurses so that Caribbean health systems (and nurse themselves) stand to benefit in the long run. |
