Description
Summary:This case study illustrates how ethnographic researchers can use video recordings to gain insight in social interaction. The author introduces a set of theoretical and methodological starting points for doing video research and presents two examples from an ethnographic study of the operating theatres of a London hospital. The examples show how detailed micro-analysis of small video clips can be combined with analysis of the wider social context in which the activity featuring in the clip unfolds. They also illustrate how video-enhanced ethnography can provide means to make explicit aspects of social life that often remain unarticulated in field notes.
