Description
Summary:This case describes the impact of "insider" and "outsider" researcher status on the collection and analysis of data in a qualitative study. Examples are taken from a doctoral dissertation study on the experiences of undocumented Mexican mothers in a new suburban immigrant community. For the research, 20 mothers and 27 key informants from 17 social and health service agencies were interviewed. The concepts of critical reflexivity, empathy, and transparency are discussed as integral to the research process beginning with the development of the initial research questions, and moving from data collection to analysis and write-up. Using examples that emerged during a 2-year field study period, the case provides an illustration of methodological rigor that accounts for the effect of the researcher on the data
