| Summary: | This report considers the use of a focus group as a data collection tool in early childhood research. The report outlines one researchers experience, analyzing the difficulties of gaining meaningful data during focused group discussions, considering in some depth the impacts of careful management on the validity of the findings, providing detailed guidance for student researchers. The findings suggest that the more experienced the researcher, the more valid the findings are likely to be, with much opportunity of bias and inadvertent influence negatively affecting the reliability of the findings. However, with practice, good planning, and an ethical approach, this method can lead to change in practice and is a pragmatic way to gain multiple views from participants. |
