Description
Summary:Grounded theory methodology was used to develop a conceptual model for mental health nursing practice to improve quality of care. Previously, there was no model to guide mental health nursing practice in Kenya. Nurses used medical models that constrained their critical thinking ability. Consequently, nursing care was practiced by intuition rather than by rationale. This caused dissatisfaction among consumers of nursing care, who publicly complained about poor nursing services. The Department of Nursing, Kenya Ministry of Health, proposed the introduction of conceptual models which are developed and effectively used in the developed countries. However, it was not clear how they would be applied in the Kenyan context. As noted by Shoqirat (2015), empirical research indicates that conceptual models developed in Western countries are not used in Africa because they are not applicable. It, therefore, became imperative to develop a customized conceptual model for Kenya. The grounded theory that is widely accepted as a systematic methodology for the generation of theories was selected for the study. It would allow for a contextualized model that could be acceptable to Kenyan mental health nurses to improve the quality of care. This case study is designed to present the experiences of the researchers in using grounded theory and serves as a learning session for other postgraduate researchers using the same methodology. It therefore focuses on the application of grounded theory and not on the details of data collection, analysis procedures, or findings.
