| Summary: | Born at Long Preston, Craven, Yorkshire, Catharine Cappe's (1744-1821) autobiography describes her 'devout Yorkshire upbringing, marriage to a clergyman, and later social reform work, c.1750-1812. She was the daughter of the Revd. Jeremiah Harrison, a Church of England Clergyman, and her mother, née Winn. In 1788 Catharine married Newcome Cappe, a minister, who died two years later leaving Catharine with 6 stepchildren. The author takes us into the life of an Evangelical social reformer who established a Female Benefit Club for miners' wives and daughters in Yorkshire and founded District Committees of Ladies to help poor women throughout the country. |
