How does this stranger, the son of a Parisian tailor, find himself at twenty-two a geographer to the king and tutor to the young Louis XV? It is this extraordinary journey that the authors of this book retrace, reconstructing the network that he was able to create while ensuring the protection of the Dukes of Orleans over three generations and the interest of the Portuguese crown. Over the course of the chapters D'Anville's impressive intellectual ability is revealed, one able to satisfy the requirements of his patrons without betraying his sources, maintaining his scholarly integrity despite the pressure of diplomatic issues.
