Description
Summary:Anne Hébert, Henri Bourassa and Louis-Alexandre Taschereau are among the major figures in the political and cultural history of twentieth-century Quebec. But do we know that outside their respective fields of action, they belonged to the seigneurial world of the Laurentians, which was disappearing before their eyes? Officially abolished in December 1854 after several decades of debate on the seigneurial question, the seigneurial system took a long time to die out completely, a vestige of New France in 19th-century Quebec. The story of this slow agony is that of an encounter between tradition and modernity, between feudalism and liberalism. The law abolishing feudal rights and duties, which was supposed to put an end to this anachronistic institution at a time of capitalism and urbanization, paradoxically had the effect of favoring the lords above all and legitimizing the maintenance of economic relations as well as seigneurial privileges for more than a century. Annuities were paid until 1970 to complete the process begun in 1854 and seigneurial lands still exist today. This book, the result of extensive archival research, combined with an oral history investigation, tells the story of this process and observes its traces (economic, cultural and heritage) until the very recent past. By analyzing the mechanisms and forms of these seigneurial reminiscences in twentieth-century Quebec, readers are invited to observe contemporary Quebec in the light of its feudal past and to question their meaning.
